Water pipes and sewer pipes

Procedures to follow when problems occur with water and sewer pipes

To begin with, you must be able to identify the location of the following items:

  1. Main water inlet valve
  2. Sewer cleaning plug
  3. Town service box

The main water inlet valve is located inside the house. In fact, it must be accessible at all times. The sewer cleaning plug is usually located close to the water inlet inside the house and must also be easily accessible at all times. Modifications should not be made to the cleaning plug.

The service box is located outside, along the property line, usually in the front. If you are not aware of its location, we suggest you contact the Public Works Division at 514-453-2213, extension 1.

What to do if the water pipe freezes

First of all, check if the neighbours have water. If so, the problem is probably coming from your property. Begin by checking the main water inlet going from the basement slab to the service valve right up to the ceiling. It is often along this path that problems occur. You can thaw the water using a heat source such as a heater or hair dryer. If the water fails to thaw, call the Public Works Division so they can do what is required to thaw out the water pipe. However, the property owner will be responsible for the costs involved.

If the neighbours also do not have water, the problem is probably coming from the Town’s main pipe. In this case, the Town will be responsible for the cost of thawing out the pipe.

In the event of a sewer blockage or back-up, please inform the Public Works Division immediately so they can unblock the sewer using a manual or electric plumber’s snake. As for a frozen water pipe, if the blockage is located between the connection ring serving the home and property, the property owner will be responsible for the costs. If the blockage is located between the connection ring and the main sewer, the Town will be responsible for the costs. In all other cases, before proceeding with the work, the Town employee will ask the resident concerned to sign a form in advance authorizing the work to make sure that respective responsibilities are well understood.
